Justin is a 14 month old baby born with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) in both eyes. This condition left him completely blind, with very little light perception, for the first 10 months of his life. The optic nerve is the nerve which transmits visual images from the eye to the brain for processing. With ONH, the optic nerve is severely underdeveloped, or small. Justin was diagnosed at 4 months of age and we were told by many doctors that there was no cure or treatment for this condition -- our son would be blind forever. After many prayers and hours of research, we found a treatment program that could possibly help him see.
At 10 months old, Justin participated in an ONH treatment case study in Hangzhou, China using umbilical cord stem cells to promote the growth of his optic nerves. His treatment was successful and he now has visual abilities we never thought possible! He easily crawls throughout our home, without bumping into anything; he sees objects from across the room and goes after them; tries to climb the stairs; enjoys watching himself in the mirror; and is so curious about the world around him. Our favorite visual accomplishment with Justin is witnessing him look people in the eye and smile.
